MNH provides update on conversation works at ancient monument
The conservation team carrying out work at Harry Kelly's Cottage in Cregneash have encountered challenges that 'require time and specialist care' to resolve.
Manx National Heritage says significant conservation works are underway, with scaffolding now fully enclosing the building ahead of a complete rethatching of the roof.
Before the new thatch can be laid, the integrity of the building as a whole has been inspected, revealing cracks in the masonry, while repairs are also needed to the chimney stacks.
Layers of lime-wash have been removed, while the straw thatch has been taken down so the condition of the traditional turf under-thatch can be assessed.
MNH says this is an important conservation project that will ensure the cottage continues to tell its unique story for generations to come.
Its research ahead of the work has included using historic photographs to ensure the thatch is reinstalled in a traditional way, while locally recycled clay has been sourced for wall repairs.
The cottage is a registered ancient monument, recognised for its association with renowned Manx speaker Harry Kelly.
