New system could succeed MiCards after U-turn extension

Treasury says it is working on a potential payment card system, similar to MiCards, which would eventually replace the scheme.

Towards the end of last year, they'd been due to be withdrawn - a move that prompted significant political pressure, leading government to reverse course and extend their use for a further 12 months.

Ending the scheme had been expected to save around £500,000 a year.

Chris Thomas set out some of the figures during questions in the House of Keys and has committed to bringing new proposals back to Tynwald by May 2026:
