Department of Transport staff are expected to go ahead with all the planned road works in relation to the TT races this weekend, after being assured more 'health and safety' protection will be made available, if required.
A hundred and twenty manual workers told management they felt unsafe on open roads, and there were concerns they might not carry out such tasks as preparing the Mountain Road for the one-way system which operates during the TT period.
However, following a meeting yesterday evening, the police have offered to help, by taking steps to slow down traffic, and highlighting the fact work is going on. Staff will be asked whether they want the extra 'protection' on an individual basis.
Meanwhile, the DoT has written to the relevent workers, to reassure them about legal protection during race festivals and special events.
Among other things, the letter says the involvement of staff in events such as the TT and Manx Grand Prix is limited to highways maintenance and traffic control, and does not include marshalling duties.
