Watterson believes role presents opportunities

The new President of Tynwald says he’s looking forward to doing more with the role saying it is his ‘life’s ambition’.

Juan Watterson was given the title following an election in Tynwald on Tuesday (21 July).

It means he’s no longer a Rushen MHK and will not stand in September’s General Election.

He’s also vacated his position as Speaker of the House of Keys.

Mr Watterson had represented the southern constituency since 2006.

“I owe a big thank you to the people of Rushen, who for 20 years have given me an overwhelming mandate to go in to bat on their behalf, who have brought me their problems and let me be part of the solution.

“There is a part of me that feels like I’m letting you down by not standing as your MHK this time round. I cannot thank you enough for that opportunity.”
