Union says freight costs and fares must be treated as priorities, not afterthoughts

The Isle of Man Trades Union Council (TUC) says the Steam Packet Company must put residents and businesses at the heart of its operations.

In a statement responding to recent remarks by Chief Minister Alfred Cannan, the TUC said affordability and accessibility should be treated as priorities, not "afterthoughts."

It warned that freight charges directly affect the cost of living and place pressure on local businesses trying to compete with UK prices.

The chief minister has insisted the government-owned operator should continue without taxpayer subsidies, arguing support in the form of subvention would take money from other important areas.

The Steam Packet welcomed Mr Cannan’s comments and pointed to fare changes introduced over the past year, including free travel for children.

It said it is planning investment of up to £120 million over the next five years to replace fast craft Manannan and maintain its fleet, funded through profits and borrowing at "zero cost" to taxpayers.

But the TUC believes the Steam Packet is a lifeline public service and its success cannot be measured only in profitability.

It further called for a balanced approach, including mechanisms to pass on any freight savings to consumers, fairer fares for residents, and a model that reflects the company's responsibility to the people of the Isle of Man.
