Union challenges government’s £7.4m savings claim

TUC questions transparency of savings and warns reforms could put staff and services at risk

The Isle of Man Trades Union Council has raised concerns over the government’s Efficiencies and Change Programme, questioning whether claimed 'potential savings' of £7.4 million represent genuine reform.

The TUC says many of the reported efficiencies - such as contract renewals, building reviews and digital payslips - are "basic administrative work" rather than structural changes.

It also warns that recruitment controls risk delaying hiring, lowering morale and increasing pressure on staff.

It is calling for full disclosure of all 96 projects within the programme, a detailed breakdown of how the £7.4 million figure has been calculated, and assurances that services and jobs will not be cut.

Government describes the initiative as a long-term reform effort aimed at delivering simpler, faster and more cost-effective services.

Minister without Portfolio Tim Crookall says departments were engaged in the process and momentum was clear, with savings expected to evolve further in the months ahead.

The debate comes against the backdrop of forecast overspends in four departments, including a £7.3 million deficit for the year in Health and Social Care.
