Scottish man's efforts to give back to charity which supported his mental health struggle
A Royal Artillery veteran who was diagnosed with a debilitating autoimmune disease after leaving the army is due to walk around the Isle of Man's coastline as part of his 16,000 mile ‘journey of a lifetime’.
Daniel McNeil started walking around Britain, and its Islands, in March 2021 to raise awareness of mental health issues – tonight he’ll arrive on Manx shores (3 October).
He’ll continue in his efforts to raise money for the armed forces charity SSAFA – The Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen’s’ Families Association.
The charity supported Daniel, who is from Dumfries, to turn his life around when spiralling depression led him to the brink of suicide.
“One of the best things about the walk is people's kindness. It’s mind-blowing how incredibly generous people have been. It really gives you faith in humanity.” – Daniel McNeil
So far, he’s raised more than £22,000:
