A large quantity of waste material, burning within a construction site on the Balthane industrial estate, proved a tricky incident for fire crews from Castletown.
The blaze included some plastic materials which, combined with the wind direction, led to much of Ballasalla being engulfed in smoke.
Residents were advised to close their windows and doors, and stay inside, and smoke was reported as far north as St Mark's.
Fire fighters had difficulties reaching the blaze, because the ground was water-logged, and it was necessary to ferry water to the scene.
A mechanical digger was also used to put out the flames.
The crews left the scene at about 9pm yesterday.
