The changes will come into effect from early January
The Western Civic Amenity Site (WCAS) has announced updated charges for the disposal of electrical waste following changes to UK enforcement policies for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE).
From 2 January 2025, all Isle of Man amenity sites will face increased costs under a new contract brokered by the Department of Infrastructure, prompting WCAS to revise its disposal fees.
Charges for fridges will increase significantly, and fees will now apply to other WEEE items for the first time.
WCAS will also implement stricter rules: no electrical items will be accepted in the re-use area, and all must be declared to staff for scrutiny.
The updated charges include:
- Small fridge/freezer: £57 (up from £34)
- Large fridge/freezer: £75 (up from £53)
- Extra-large fridge/freezer: £131 (up from £87)
- Smaller electrical items, such as game consoles or DVD players, will cost £2, while large appliances like washing machines will cost £40.
WCAS states that these fees purely reflect the costs imposed by the Department of Infrastructure for WEEE disposal.
Extra small items, such as kettles and keyboards, will remain free of charge.
