The president of the Manx National Farmers Union says the cost of food in Island shops will be affected more by world food prices than the success of the local harvest.
The soaring price of wheat is likely to trigger a sharp increase in the cost of staples like bread and pasta, after America's worst drought in half a century and poor harvests in Russia and the Ukraine.
Locally-grown wheat is used at the Island's flour mill and after a prolonged wet summer, the pressure's on farmers to bring crops in or risking losing them.
