Government's urging people to prepare themselves for the colder months

Government's reminding people on the Isle of Man to prepare themselves for the winter months ahead.

It's urging people to take 'proactive steps' to stay safe as the nights get darker and the temperatures begin to drop.

It says prepping early can help prevent avoidable disruptions and ensure safety and wellbeing during periods of adverse weather.

People are being encouraged to:

  • Make sure heating systems are serviced and functioning efficiently
  • Check that windows and doors are properly insulated
  • Service vehicles and carry out winter safety checks
  • Keep backup torches and batteries in the event of power outages
  • Know how to turn off water supplies in case of frozen or burst pipes
  • Store a spare supply of food and water
  • Ensure you have enough essential medications at home and that prescription medications won’t run out if the weather changes suddenly

Minister for Justice and Home Affairs Jane Poole-Wilson MHK, says: "Preparedness is something we all have a part to play in.

"By checking that our homes are ready for winter and knowing what to do in an emergency, we not only protect ourselves but also help reduce pressure on essential services when the weather turns."

Dr. Matt Tyrer, Director of Public Health, says: "Winter can be a challenging time for our health and wellbeing. There are more coughs and colds going around, and the shorter days can really affect how we feel.

"Keeping warm, being active, and staying connected, especially with older or more vulnerable neighbours, can make a big difference to everyone’s health this winter."
