'Structure as well as scope should have been examined'

Rushen MHK Phil Gawne says last year's government restructuring wasn't the ideal solution to problems, but has made things better.

Mr Gawne, who will defend his seat in September's general election, says in a perfect world the government would also have examined the services it provided, and prioritised them.

He says that would have made the job of looking at possible cutbacks a bit easier, in the wake of further budget reductions caused by the United Kingdom's VAT negotiations.

However, he still thinks changing the structure of government was the right thing to do (listen to audio file below):

Mr Gawne is one of four people who have declared in Rushen so far, the others being fellow sitting members Quintin Gill and Juan Watterson, and challenger Laurence Skelly.
