Island athlete to contest 5,000m race in Madrid later this month

Manx athlete David Mullarkey has been selected to represent Great Britain & Northern Ireland at this year's European Athletics Team Championships.

The Island competitor will contest the Men's 5,000m track race in what will also be his senior international debut in the team.

The 42-strong GB & NI lineup will face off against 15 other nations in four days of competition from 26-29 June in Madrid, Spain.

Performance Director at UK Athletics, Paula Dunn says: "The European Team Championships provide an excellent opportunity for our athletes to gain valuable championship experience in a highly competitive environment.

"With 42 athletes representing the GB&NI team, including several senior debutants and established international performers, this event plays a crucial role in their development and season plans.

"Competing in Madrid against Europe’s best will be a key milestone for many as we look ahead to the World Championships later in the year."

Closer to home, Mullarkey is the holder of four Isle of Man men's track and field records over the 5,000m; 3,000m; 1-Mile and 1,500m distances.

Separately, he also holds the Manx men's record in road running competition over 10km.
