Candidates told TUPE laws are 'even more vital'

Laws to protect the rights of workers in companies which are taken over should be introduced in the Isle of Man as a matter of urgency.

That's the message general election candidates heard from the Island's trades unions last night (Thursday).

TUPE (Transfer of Undertakings, Protection of Employment) legislation safeguards employment and working conditions in the event of companies being taken over or privatised.

It is currently enacted in the United Kingdom and the European Union, but not the Isle of Man.

National secretary of the RMT union Steve Todd was one of those who address the meeting.

He says the current economic climate makes the law even more vital:
