'Manx Missile' misses out despite history-making year
Sir Mark Cavendish has not been shortlisted for this year's BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards.
The 'Manx Missile' doesn't feature among the six contenders for the 2024 accolade announced by the BBC yesterday (9 December).
The nominees are footballer Jude Bellingham; runner Keely Hodgkinson; darts player Luke Littler; cricketer, Joe Root; para-cyclist Sarah Storey and triathlon competitor Alex Yee.
This year, Cavendish made cycling history as he claimed an unprecedented 35th Tour de France stage win in early July.
In June he was made a Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (KBE) in the 2024 King's Birthday Honours list.
The 39-year-old then received high knighthood from HRH Prince of Wales at Windsor Castle in October.
Meanwhile, the judging panel for this year's award included five-time cycling world champion, Dame Laura Kenny; ex-runner, Iwan Thomas; Paralympian, Ade Adepitan; ex-Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha and Ireland rugby veteran Rory Best.
Other honours will be handed out on the night such as the Lifetime Achievement award; World Sport Star award; Young Sports Personality of the Year; Team of the Year; Coach of the Year; Unsung Hero and the Helen Rollason Award.
The ceremony will take place on Tuesday, 17 December.
