Manx cycling star Mark Cavendish was not in contention for a repeat success in the 2012 Milan-San Remo spring classic.
He fell back early on in the race and, despite the efforts of his teammates, never made it back up to the group of favourites.
Cavendish won the event in 2009 - one of the five monuments of cycling.
It was won by Simon Gerrans of newly established Australian team GreenEdge.
