Cavendish taken to hospital after Tour crash

Manxman forced into barriers

Manx cycling star Mark Cavendish is on his way to hospital after a heavy crash at the end of the fourth stage of the Tour de France.

Cavendish was moving up behind the leaders when he came into contact with Peter Sagan’s elbow and crashed into the barriers.

He needs medical attention for what is feared to be an aggravated shoulder injury following his crash in Harrogate in the Tour three years ago.

He will also have a cut on his hand checked.

Cavendish, a 30-time Tour stage winner and chasing Eddy Merckx's all-time record of 34 Tour stage wins, required medical treatment on the ground before crossing the finish line with his right hand bandaged, and spoke to reporters after the stage with his right arm in a sling.

World champion Sagan was later kicked off the tour for causing the crash.
