Mark Cavendish has won the first stage of the Giro d'Italia 2013.
The Manx Missile timed his race to the line to perfection, sprinting up the middle of the road to edge out Elia Viviani with Nacer Bouhanni third.
It takes Cavendish's Giro stage wins to 11 and overall race victories to 100.
‘It was a difficult stage,’ he said. ‘It was not an easy stage with all the corners but the team did incredible to stay at the front. We didn't get it quite right at the end and Gert Steegmans had a mechanical in the final kilo which we need to look at. They are costing us too many races. It was really really hot out there but I wanted it so bad.’
As race leader, Cavendish will wear the Maglia Rosa in Sunday's team time trial.
