Football: Manxman O'Donoghue makes Carlisle United debut

17-year-old one of three academy players to make first appearances

Manx footballer Freddie O'Donoghue has made his competitive debut for Carlisle United this week.

The former Island player made his maiden first team appearance during Carlisle United's 2-1 home defeat to Nottingham Forest Under-21's in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy on Tuesday night (3 September).

The 17-year-old forward was one of three academy players to come off the bench to compete for the Carlisle first team in midweek along with Sam Hetherington and Jake Allan, the latter of whom scored his side's only goal of the game.

The club is congratulating all three players on their debuts calling it 'a proud night for our academy.'

Having been snapped up by the Cumbrian outfit in early 2023 and working his way through its academy, O'Donoghue made multiple first team appearances in pre-season before being selected in the league squad for the first time last Saturday (31 August).

There he was an unused substitute as Carlisle United suffered a 2-1 home loss at Brunton Park to Tranmere Rovers in Sky Bet League Two.
