Island athlete Keith Gerrard produced an excellent performance when he was the second under-23 Briton home in the European cross-country trial at Liverpool’s Sefton Park on Saturday.
It clinched his automatic selection for the Great Britain and Northern Ireland team at the European Cross-Country Championships in Spain next month.
Gerrard and winner Kevin Deighton of Bridlington Road Runners will form part of a six man team heading to Toro in Northern Spain to compete on December 9.
Also expected to join them when the full team is announced on Tuesday will be past Junior European Silver Medallist Andy Vernon and Ryan McLeod, whose father Mike, was a medal winner for Great Britain at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
Although Keith has represented Great Britain before in the junior men’s, this will be his first time competing as an under-23.
