Island Games day five: more gold in the pool and finals set up for tomorrow

The penultimate day in Guernsey was a busy one

In the swimming pool, Joel Watterson won gold in the men’s 50m freestyle whilst teammate Alex Turnbull came fifth. Watterson and teammates Benjamin Kebbell, Carrick Thompson, Peter Allen also won gold in the men's 4x100m freestyle relay. Laura Kinley won silver in the women’s 100m individual medley race.

In cycling, there were two medals for Manx mountain bikers. In the women’s cross country team event, Sacha Horsthuis and Kirree Quayle secured silver whilst the men's team made up of Elliot Baxter, Owen Collins, Eric Kelly, Alex Rockwell and Ross Thorley took bronze.

Manx archers took silver in the compound head-to-head knockout, beating Guernsey in the semi-finals but missing out on gold to Jersey in the final.

There was a bronze medal for Anna Kirk in the women’s tennis singles after she lost out on a place in the final to Lauren Watson-Steele of Guernsey. In the mixed doubles, Marc Chinn and Karen Faragher were defeated in the semi-finals by a Guernsey team, but come away with a bronze, whilst Sean Drewry and Anna Kirk have made it into the final which will be played tomorrow. In the women's doubles, Sarah Long and Karen Faragher are also through to the final of their competition.

In badminton, Jessica Li and Matthew Nicholson won bronze in the mixed doubles - Jessica Li plays in the women’s singles final tomorrow.

At the athletics track this evening, both men’s and women’s relay teams secured their places in the finals tomorrow. Men’s team Daniel Clague, Gethin Owen, Samuel Perry and Ben Sinclair won their 4x400m heat whilst the women’s team made up of Andrea Ecolango, Lydia Morris, Meghan Pilley and Carla Teece finished second in the 4x100m relay. In women’s hammer throw, Tazmin Fayle finished 5th.

In football, the Isle of Man women's team narrowly missed out a place in the final after a 1-0 defeat this evening to Bermuda, they will compete for the bronze medal tomorrow in the 3rd/4th place play-off.

Elsewhere, the Isle of Man men’s team have officially finished 9th in their competition. It comes after captain Matty Woods scored the only and decisive goal in the 94th minute to secure a 1-0 win over Orkney during the positioning match this afternoon. The women's team were beaten 1-0 by Bermuda in the semi-finals and will play for the bronze medal tomorrow.

Kerenza Baker and Katherine Vinas made it into the women's table tennis doubles round of 16, but were knocked out by a Faroe Islands pair.

The Manx men’s basketball team were defeated by the Cayman Islands 99-31.

In shooting, Nicholas Mihailovits sits in second after three rounds of the open English Skeet competition. There are two rounds remaining.

In sailing, the provisional results of the final day show a 6th place finish for the Isle of Man in the team event. In ILCA6, Matthew Perry is in provisional 13th with Elsie Hyett in 22nd. In the ILCA 7, the results show Ross Arnold in 11th with teammate Jason Hyett in 12th. Results have to be adjudicated before confirmation.
