NW200: Double delight for Todd, Irwin makes superbike history

McGuinness earns podium and Hickman bags Supertwin double

Glenn Irwin made superbike history and Davey Todd claimed back-to-back victories during the final day of racing at this year's North West 200 today (11 May).

Six races were held across the last day of action at The Triangle Circuit in warm and sunny conditions.

Proceedings began with the first four-lap supertwin race with TT outright lap record holder Peter Hickman taking victory ahead of Richard Cooper whilst Mike Browne took third.

After that was the latest six-lap superbike race as Irwin made history to win ahead of Todd and Michael Dunlop in second and third respectively.

It took Irwin onto ten superbike wins at the meeting, eclipsing the previous record of nine which had been held jointly by Michael Rutter and Joey Dunlop.

A thrilling six-lap supersport race followed with Todd edging out Cooper to top spot whilst Dunlop claimed the final podium place after a gripping battle with Browne to the finish line.

Fourth in the programme was the superstock contest - also over six laps - the initial start was halted by a red flag before being restarted shortly after.

But drama before the restart saw Dunlop a non-starter after he failed to complete a warm-up lap ahead of the contesting commencing for a second time.

Once underway, Todd made it a hat-trick of victories at this year's meeting ahead of Hickman in second whilst an emotional finish saw John McGuinness MBE take his first NW200 podium since 2012 in third.

Deja vu followed in the second supertwin race as Hickman once again got the better of Cooper as they took first and second spot respectively whilst veteran competitor Jeremy McWilliams finished behind them in the remaining podium place.

The action then concluded with the one remaining six-lap superbike showdown - Irwin would command again to take his 11th superbike win ahead of Todd in second whilst Dean Harrison - a retirement in the earlier superstock runout - took a podium in third for Honda Racing UK.
