Old Boys win big cup tie

Old Boys won the match of the day in style as the showpiece competition in combination football got underway.

They defeated Rushen United 3-0 at Blackberry Lane in the preliminary round of the Ascot Hotel Junior Cup, courtesy of goals from Nick Bass, Darren Hudgeon and Mark Burman.

Last year’s beaten finalists St Mary’s eased to victory over neighbours Pulrose.

Ian Geohegan, Joe Andrews, Paul Craig and Stuart Pacey were the scorers in a 4-0 success.

Douglas Athletic caused the surprise of the day with a 1-0 win at Gymns.

Wes Gibson, Ian Drake and Lee Christian found the net as Union Mills saw off runaway Combination Two leaders Colby 3-1 at Garey Mooar.

A double from veteran marksman Peter Langridge fired Braddan to a 2-1 win at Ramsey Youth Centre but their northern rivals Ramsey triumphed 4-3 in a thriller at Ronaldsway, despite starting the match with 10 men.

Jake Pinnington, Jogger Leece, Kieran Quigley and Shaun Kermeen were on target for the northerners.

A first half own goal and a second half Paddy Dempsey penalty ensured St George’s overcame battling Michael United 2-0, while Ayre United were pushed all the way before defeating Douglas and District in a penalty shoot-out.

The match finished 1-1 after normal-time and extra-time with Phil Corkill on target for the Tangerines and Darren Armstrong scoring for D&D.
