Success for Douglas, Vagabonds and 'Nomads' in league & cup
Report by Dave Christian:
Douglas win at Winnington Park
Douglas won 40-10 at Winnington Park in Regional 2 North West and the six-try performance earned them a bonus point to boot.
The win leaves them in eighth position in the standings but well within striking distance of a top five finish.
Tries for Douglas came via Jonty Cope, Ryan Wren, Charlie Henthorn, Kyle Martin, Si Hoddinott and a penalty try.
Wren’s try was perhaps the most notable as it was his first try for Douglas since his recent transfer - Nathan Robson added five conversions.
Vagabonds take maximum points against Fleetwood
Vagabonds picked up their second win of the season in Counties 3 ADM Lancs/Cheshire with a 24-10 victory over Fleetwood at Ballafletcher.
The visitors took an early lead with a Mirch Gorse try converted by Ricky Newton.
'Vagas' replied just before the break courtesy of Tom Gascoyne and when the teams turned around Fleetwood led 7-5.
Daniel Bonwick scored early in the second half to put Vagabonds in front but a Ricky Newton penalty for Fleetwood tied the game at 10-10 with just under half an hour to play.
Newton missed a second penalty chance midway through the half but the rest of the game belonged to Vagabonds.
Gascoyne bagged his second from a pushover and in the closing minutes Bonwick also went in for a second try to claim the bonus point, he also converted the final two tries in a proper captain’s performance.
Nomads into Cheshire Bowl Final
Southern Nomads beat Oldershaw 50-7 to top the pool in the Cheshire Bowl and guarantee a place in the final.
Nomad’s skipper Finn McGregor crossed for two tries as did Max Elwig; other tries came from Harry Brereton, Mikey Craine, Rob Craine and Tony Quinn with Mark Young adding five conversions.
Nomads look likely to face Port Sunlight in the final which is on a date yet to be announced by the organising committee.
