
Island athletes shone with seven medals, including three golds, at the Lancashire Cross Country Championships at Witton Park in Blackburn on Saturday.
After a year of injury, Keith Gerrard got 2008 to a good start by convincingly winning gold in the senior men’s race, while Sarah Astin dominated in a similar fashion to also strike gold, winning the under 15s race by around a minute.
The senior men’s team – comprising Gerrard, John Halligan, Darren Gray, Ed Gumbley, Kevin Loundes and Nigel Armstrong - completed the trio of golds, regaining the Lancashire team title after four years.
There were silver medals for the under 17’s women’s team of Gemma Astin, Rachel Franklin and Bronwyn Kaneen.
Gail Griffiths claimed silver in the over 40’s women’s race, while Andy Fox did likewise in the veteran’s 45.
Gemma Astin took bronze in the under 17 women’s competition, while the senior women’s team just missed out on the bronze, claiming fourth place.
