Swim team setting records and gaining fans

strong performances all round

The coach of the island's Commonwealth Games swimming squad has praised the performances of the team. 

Competing against some of the best athletes from around the world, 38 personal bests and eight Manx records have been broken at the Glasgow games.

The games have also seen strong performances from debutants in the team, including 14-year-old Oscar Maddrell who finished third in his 800m men's heat. 

Speaking to Manx Radio's sports editor Rob Pritchard, Holland said the performances across the team have been 'very exciting'. 

He said: "The first four days have been have been amazing. Been way more statistically than than we would normally expect."

While the more seasoned Manx Commonwealth Games swimmers have broken national records, Holland has been enthused by the performance of the younger athletes making their debuts. 

He said the experienced gained will see them able to return in four years time with even more to show for their efforts. 

Away from the results, Holland said the Manx team has is well supported by the travelling three-legs fans. 

He said: "I've had five different coaches ask me whether you can get a Super Manx T-shirt. 

"The support has been amazing, and they just love it, they're swimming fans, like we all are. They're here to support their their loved ones, but also the rest of the team gets just as big a cheer and like I say when a Manx athlete comes out, it's nearly the same as when the the home nations guys because the roof comes off and it's and it's just lovely to hear and a few of the athletes have said I've really benefitted from the the big cheer."
