Swimming: Oscar Maddrell becomes triple British champion

Manx swimmer also breaks Island records during successful trip

Isle of Man swimmer, Oscar Maddrell has become a triple British champion with several stellar performances in the UK last week.

The young Manx athlete went on to claim three gold medals as well as junior and senior Island records whilst competing in the Aquatics GB Next Gen Championships at Ponds Forge in Sheffield.

The first of those came on Thursday, 16 July where he became the first male British champion from the Island in 18 years with success in the Men's 1500m Freestyle.

After that, Maddrell impressed again in the Men's 800m Freestyle on Saturday, 18 July where his time of eight minutes, 33.65 seconds saw him secure both the British title as well as senior and junior Island records in the discipline.

His third and final gold medal then came on Sunday, 19 July as he took top spot in the Men's 400m Freestyle, also scooping a junior Manx record in the process as he clocked a time of four minutes, 7.90 seconds.

Looking head, Maddrell is now due to link up with the Isle of Man swimming team for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow which are being held from this Thursday (23 July) to Sunday, 2 August.
