Tributes paid to Island road racing veteran Des Evans

Former competitor and marshal died earlier this month

Tributes are being paid by the Isle of Man road racing community following the death of racing vetern Des Evans.

The Southern 100 Club says Mr Evans died on Thursday, 12 December after battling with illness over the last few months.

The organisation is offering its condolences to Mr Evans family, adding his presence at Billown 'will be sorely missed' but 'the fond memories will remain in our hearts and minds forever.'

Also paying tribute is the Andreas Racing Association which say it's 'extremely saddened' to hear of the former competitors death and is also passing on its sympathies to his wife Wyn, family and friends.

Des Evans raced at the Southern 100 between 1959 and 1967 before taking up travelling marshal duties there in 1971 through to 2002.

He also worked as a rider liaison and welfare officer at the southern course between 1984 and 2000.

Mr Evans also competed on the Snaefell Mountain Course during the 1960's in the Manx Grand Prix and Isle of Man TT Races.

He raced three times in the TT between 1967 and 1969 - once in the Lightweight TT and in the Sidecar 500 and 750 TT's.

In the north of the Island he also served as ARA Clerk of the Course for a time.
