Anaerobic digester planned for later this year
A building materials firm is looking to expand its recycling plant and produce its own electricity from food waste.
Corletts, which is based at Ballaharra Quarry in the west of the Island, currently process 2.7 million glass bottles a year on the Island.
The 3000 tonnes of the material which is collected from bring banks, kerbside and pubs around the island, is converted into a product called eco sand.
Jon Corlett, head of operations on the quarry is now planning a joint venture with coffee suppliers Mann Vend to construct an anaerobic digester.
It's believed to be the first of its kind planned for the Island on an industrial scale.
Methane and liquid fertiliser are said to be the only by-products of the process, as Mr Corlett explains:
