Commissioners press DOI for changes
Castletown’s main shopping streets are uneven, unsafe, and in need of major repair, according to the head of the town’s local authority.
Colin Leather says many people have been seriously injured on Arbory and Malew Street and Castletown Commissioners have been pressing the Department of Infrastructure (DOI) to make changes.
It comes as plans were submitted for the continuation of regeneration works in Douglas around the area of Market Hill.
Mr Leather doesn’t object to the development of Douglas, which he sees as integral to bringing visitors into Castletown, but says other towns do need attention.
A meeting was held between the department and the commissioners two weeks ago to discuss changes to the square, and parking.
According to a civil servant within the DOI, a business case has been submitted to the Treasury, requesting capital funding to resurface Malew and Arbory Street.
If the application receives the green light, work on the streets still wouldn’t begin until 2020.
