Manx Radio speaks to Terry's Tato's, Matrix Arena and Gourmet Shakes
Businesses on Douglas's high street say they're facing low footfall and 'crippling rates'.
A number of business owners have spoken to Manx Radio about the pitfalls of operating in the city centre.
Nigel Thijs runs the Matrix Arena in the Strand Shopping Centre.
He says he's looking at moving premises again having recently relocated from Ballasalla:
So, does moving out of the high street make a difference?
Tim Brogan is the director of Gourmet Shakes which relocated from Castle Street to Windsor Road, at the top of Crellin's Hill:
Douglas City Council says: ‘We are always saddened to hear of any business experiencing difficulty and fully recognise the cost pressures many are under, which is why we work hard to keep any rate rise as low as possible.
‘It is also important to note that rates only make up a small proportion of total operating costs in the city centre with rent, utilities and other charges often having a bigger impact - many of which are beyond our control.
‘Like all organisations, the Council faces rising costs too, but we remain committed to supporting our high street through Douglas City Centre Management, helping to drive footfall and promote local businesses.’
Manx Radio has also approached Manx Utilities for a response to some of the topics mentioned in this article. The organisation has acknowledged our request and is working on its response.
