CoC - 'Migration report welcome but more talks needed'

Organisation says some members still have 'serious concerns' on subject

The findings of a government report on migration are broadly welcomed, but 'closer collaboration' is needed with the business community.

Isle of Man Chamber of Commerce has responded to the 'Inward Migration Incentives & Disincentives' report from the Council of Ministers and recent debate carried out on the matter.

The organisation says whilst it's encouraged by some of the conclusions in the document it has 'serious concerns about whether Government’s strategy behind these targets will meet the future needs of the Island’s economy.'

In a statement it adds: "We broadly welcome the report’s conclusions, and comments made by Ministers at the conference. As the Government has acknowledged, getting inward migration policies right is vital to address the Island’s demographic challenges and ensure sustainable economic growth.

"However, based on views from Chamber members and the wider business community it’s also clear that employers across a range of sectors still have major concerns which need to be addressed.”

Among the worries - Chamber believes - are the Island's current infrastructure - particularly housing, healthcare and education - which it thinks is 'insufficient' to support population growth.

Furthermore, it's of the view that when it comes to retaining young professionals and graduates proposed incentives 'need to be more comprehensive to effectively address the underlying factors currently contributing to the high outward migration of young talent.'
