New defences to be built in Castletown
It's going to take almost a year to build a new flood defence barrier in Castletown.
Reinforced concrete walls are to be installed around the harbour, to prevent a repeat of the serious damage caused to homes and businesses during a storm surge in 2014.
The £2.3 million project, approved by planners in October 2016, aims to prevent flooding in Back Hope Street, Victoria Road, Bridge Street, Qualtrough's Yard and the Boat Park
Trees and shrubs are currently being removed ahead of major building work, starting on 8 May. The contract has been awarded to Auldyn Construction, with the entire project set to last 45 weeks.
The Department of Infrastructure says the project is part of a wider strategy to 'mitigate' the impact of rising sea leavels, as a result of climate change.
