39-year-old said he'd only had 'couple of pints'

A Douglas man's been disqualified from driving for three years, after admitting being over twice the legal limit behind the wheel.

Tommy Peter Cheary, of Samuel Webb Crescent, pleaded guilty to the offence at Douglas courthouse last week.

The 39 year-old caught the attention of Special Constables on 1 April, after they saw him reversing the wrong way down a one-way street in Ramsey.

Cheary told the officers he'd had 'a couple of pints'.

But a breathalyser test confirmed he was far in excess of the limit.

He later admitted to having lost his license while living in South Africa in the early 2000's for a similar offence.

Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes gave him credit for his early guilty plea, and full co-operation with officers, before revoking his license.

Cheary was also fined £900 and ordered to pay £125 in costs.
