Sad end to key part Island's heritage says Chief Minister

The leader of Douglas Borough Council has defended the decision to scrap its historic horse tram service.

A special meeting yesterday (Thurs) resulted in an unanimous vote based on mounting financial concerns.

The service has been running at a loss for several years, and in recent years costing ratepayers over £420,000 per year.

But there's been widespread outcry following the news - two online petitions have already been set up to 'save the horse trams'.

David Christian said the decision was regrettable, but necessary:

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Allan Bell says while it’s a sad end to a key part of the Island’s heritage, he can understand the council’s predicament.
