'Work is taking place to find a solution'
The Department of Health and Social Care has opened talks with officials in Liverpool over the requirement for Isle of Man patients receiving treatment at the city's hospitals to pay the new £2 per night visitor levy in nearby hotels.
A statement to Manx Radio from the DHSC says engagement with Liverpool's Accommodation, Business Improvement District Board is in its early stages and no further comment can be made.
But, the health body insists Isle of Man residents should be assured that work is taking place to find a solution.
The matter was raised by Douglas South MHK Sarah Maltby who says it's unfair that Manx patients should face the extra charge as 'they aren't tourists, they're patients'.
Mrs Maltby believes the £50 a night accommodation allowance from the Manx Government is already inadequate and the added visitor tax per night is both unfair and unaffordable for many people.
The charge applies to accommodation within a specific zone of the city centre which includes 3 of the 16 specialist facilities to which Manx Care refers patients.
