Row sparked by gambling
A man who kicked his girlfriend and hit her with newspapers in a row about gambling has been handed a suspended jail sentence.
Declan James Cross of Governors Road in Douglas appeared before magistrates at Douglas Courthouse.
The 48-year-old admitted common assault, possessing cannabis and possessing a knife.
Prosecution advocate Roger Kane told the court the pair had been out drinking in Douglas and started to quarrel when she paid ten pounds into a fruit machine.
The argument continued at Cross’s home and he lost his temper, kicking her with steel-capped boots and strangling her.
She managed to escape and call the police, but Cross left his home and was later arrested and searched, when officers found a lump of cannabis worth £7 and a two-inch blade.
Magistrates imposed a four-month jail term suspended for two years, during which time Cross will be supervised by the probation service.
He was also ordered to pay £125 prosecution costs and £500 compensation to his victim.
