Island 'perfectly ready' says IIGA
Hosting the 2029 Island Games would inspire the next generation of sporting superstars and leave a ‘legacy’ for young people.
That’s the view of the education, sport and culture minister after an inspection visit from the International Island Games Association.
It says the Isle of Man is ‘perfectly ready’ to become a host for the third time.
Jorgen Pettersson is the chairman of the IIGA – he’s been assessing the Island’s chances at being selected to host the event in five years’ time.
The sporting spectacle would see international athletes compete in 14 sports in six days:
“If we are successful it will provide a once-in-a-generation opportunity for Manx athletes and inspire thousands more. Hosting the Games would be a golden opportunity to showcase the Isle of Man to new audiences, which supports key objectives in both the Island Plan and Economic Strategy.” Chief Minister Alfred Cannan

The Isle of Man put in its bid to host the games, for the third time, this summer and £2.4 million of taxpayers' money has already been set aside if we are successful.
Minister Julie Edge told Manx Radio she expects a good economic return from welcoming so many visitors:
The final decision on who will host in 2029 will be made next summer when all 23 member Islands meet at the annual general meeting in Orkney.
Economic benefits aside – what does Minister Edge hope the lasting impact of hosting the event could be?
