'No immediate changes to gas prices or supply'

Inflation on the Island has surged in the wake of the war in Iran and the resultant pressures on fuel supplies.

Measured by the Consumer Prices Index, April's figure was 4.9 percent.

That's up by two percent on March.

Government says there will be no immediate changes to gas prices or supply.

It says 'essential supplies remain stable. Heating and motor fuel distribution is unaffected, and there are no supply issues for ferries or flights'.

Chief Minister Alfred Cannan said: "The conflict continues to dominate global headlines, and our thoughts are first with those directly affected in the region.

"It is also putting strain on the global economy. Our immediate priorities in March and April have been to ensure we had confidence in the supply and availability of necessary items such as fuel.

"Today's inflation figures reflect what we have already seen, and we appreciate that prices now built into the Island's economy are putting pressure on many households and individuals.

"As we have stated before, we will continue to look towards the longer term and be ready to offer targeted support if people need it. We will keep the situation under review and adapt our response as it develops."

A spokesperson added: "We know that increases in everyday costs, particularly fuel and food, can have a real impact on households. We want to reassure people that guidance and advice is available and that we are closely monitoring the situation daily."

Government has confirmed a further £100,000 has been secured through an extension to the Energy Efficiency Scheme to 'help residents manage rising energy bills by access to free energy saving kit'.

The Communications and Utilities Regulatory Authority (CURA) confirm no immediate changes to gas prices or supply, and the Manx Utilities Authority reports electricity supply and pricing remain stable.

The Economic and National Strategy Board continues to review economic conditions and consider targeted action, with ongoing dialogue with the business community and the UK.
