Island pilot's final flight marked with water salute

Stephen retiring after 40-years and 14,000 hours of flying

A Loganair pilot was welcomed with a water cannon salute at Ronaldsway today after landing his final flight.

Stephen Thursfield, who lives on the Island, has clocked up 14,000 hours of flying over his 40-year career.

The 65-year-old base captain has described his retirement as ‘the end of an era’ but the beginning of an ‘exciting new chapter’ for the local Loganair team.

Stephen said: “Flying has been more than a career for me. I've had the time of my life flying all over the UK and beyond, in so many different aircraft and roles."

Among those greeting Stephen’s final flight was newly qualified first officer Joe Haddock – the 26-year-old from Laxey started his career at the airport as a dispatcher.

Maurice Boyle, Chief Operations Officer at Loganair, described Stephen as an ‘incredible role model’ and ‘an inspiration to many.’
