DEFA steps up monitoring after a confirmed case in Northern Ireland
The Department of Food, Environment and Agriculture (DEFA) is urging people to report any potential sightings of the Asian hornet after a confirmed case in Northern Ireland.
The non-native species is considered a serious threat to honeybees and other pollinators.
DEFA says there have been no reports in the Isle of Man, but residents are being asked to familiarise themselves with the hornet’s key features, including a dark thorax, an orange face and yellow-tipped legs.
Monitoring has been under way at ten sites since March in partnership with the Isle of Man Beekeepers’ Federation.
Minister Clare Barber says early detection is vital in preventing the species becoming established.
Anyone who believes they have seen an Asian hornet is asked to contact DEFA’s Ecosystem Policy Team on 01624 651577 and to include a photograph if possible.
People are advised not to approach or disturb the insect.
