ManxPACT calls on new MHKs to support mental health issues

Prospective MHKs are being asked to consider making the subject of suicide a ‘top priority’ if they’re elected into the next administration.

Today (10 September) marks World Suicide Prevention Day.

Mental health campaigner Juan Moore founded ManxPACT - a support group that aims to help improve mental health services on the Island.

But he’s told Manx Radio he’s been left shocked after details of his organisation were removed from the Public Health website:

Public Health says it remains committed to supporting people who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts, as well as those who have been bereaved or affected by suicide.

A spokesperson said: "We are currently refreshing the Isle of Man Suicide Prevention Strategy which is being developed collaboratively with partners. 

"As part of this work, and following engagement and feedback from organisations across the Island, we have decided that, for the time being, our public-facing resources will signpost directly to registered charities and statutory services providing support to people experiencing suicidal thoughts or crisis. 

"This is intended to provide reassurance that people at their most vulnerable are being directed towards established services with appropriate support and governance arrangements in place.

"We greatly value the contribution made by organisations and individuals across our community and remain committed to working constructively with all partners as the strategy develops. 

"Our shared priority is to ensure that people across the Isle of Man can access safe, effective and compassionate support when they need it most.

"Public Health do not provide clinical care and cannot comment on individual cases so cannot comment on the third point."
