FOI request reveals figures
The Department of Health and Social Care has paid out almost a million pounds over medical negligence claims in the last five years.
Those figures were revealed this week, after a Freedom of Information request by a member of the public.
Since 2012, the DHSC has awarded various patients settlements and damages to the tune of £969,926.
While a case-by-case breakdown has not been provided, the most paid out in a single year was the twelve months leading up to April 2013, when just shy of £670,000 was paid out to claimants.
The cost of malpractice in the Island has been diminishing year-on-year since then - last year, no negligence claims were successfully brought against the Department.
But the latest figures do also reveal what government spends on fighting its cases.
In the same five year time period, £1.4 million of additional resources have been spent on legal costs.
