Neighbours to be notified of new planning applications

Measure came into effect last month

A change to the planning laws means residents will receive a written notification when planning permission is sought for a neighbouring property.

The measure came into effect in January as part of the Built Environment Reform Programme, which is designed to make planning easier to use and more accessible.

A number of changes have already been implemented following a public survey, including additional guidance for applicants to help avoid costly delays, and a review of counter opening times.

Further actions will see a review of staffing, training and the planning website. The Department will also examine the way planning applications are dealt with - including fees and IT systems.

DEFA Minister, Clare Barber says she's confident the changes will make a real difference and help deliver on the programme's commitment to improve the built environment and build great communities.
