Every lifebelt on Douglas promenade is to be inspected once a month to make sure vandals aren't putting people's lives at risk.
At the same time, the Borough Council is to halve the number of buoyancy aids to 14, which will be located at regular intervals between the War Memorial and the Sea Terminal.
Recently, two lifebelts went missing from the promenade, which led to a police officer having to jump into the water to rescue a person who was in difficulties.
Chairman of the Public Works Committee David Ashford says the council held an urgent review after that incident, which has resulted in the new inspection regime.
He is repeating a plea for people to consider the consequences of their actions before they tamper with potentially lifesaving equipment (play audio file):
Lifebelts will no longer be positioned along the stretch of the promenade from the War Memorial to Summerland after experts told the council the gradient of the beach was insuffient for them to be required.
