Old Police Station in Castletown could be sold off after private development plan stalls

Building will be offered to government first

Manx National Heritage could sell off a historic landmark in Castletown after plans to develop it privately stalled.

The prospective tenants for the Old Police Station have withdrawn from the project.

The registered building, which was designed by Baillie Scott, will now be offered to the Isle of Man Government; if there is no interest it will be placed on the open market for sale.

In the House of Keys this week Arbory, Castletown and Malew MHK Jason Moorhouse expressed his concern that the national asset could be lost.

In 2018 an agreement was reached to transfer the building into the ownership of the Manx Museum and National Trust.

The Department for Enterprise says Manx National Heritage has followed the ‘necessary process’ to seek, and validate, a market value for the property.

Expressions of interest from departments, boards and offices will be sought before plans to sell it privately are progressed; these have to be approved by Tynwald.

But Ramsey MHK Lawrie Hooper asked Minister Tim Johnston if he had any concerns that MNH was ‘selling off’ national assets:
