The Medical Director of Noble's Hospital says he was shocked to learn of concern about major shortcomings in the treatment of seriously ill patients.
It came in a letter from senior consultants.
They felt more measures could be taken to prevent avoidable harm in areas such as drug errors and hospital-acquired infections.
The letter was sent last October - but has only recently come into the public arena.
Stephen Upsdell says the consultants had issues about care and access to it, and this may lead to changes in working practices so patients can receive whatever care they need faster - regardless of when they're admitted:
