Close – but no Bruce Willis-led space mission required.
That’s the verdict of the Island’s Space Data Association which has been keeping a careful eye on an approaching asteroid.
Tomorrow, the DA14 asteroid will pass within 27,200 kilometres of the earth’s surface – over ten times closer than the moon.
But the SDA, set up by satellite operators to improve safety, says no satellites will be threatened by the 50-metre wide space rock.
After looking at its orbit, the SDA says DA14 will come no closer than 1,000 km to any space object and won’t create debris in any orbit.
