Ferry company says work is happening 'behind the scenes'

The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company says the planning and preparatory work for Manannan's replacement is continuing 'behind the scenes'.

That's despite what the Treasury Minister Chris Thomas told Manx Radio's Douglas Central Election Debate last night:

Mr Thomas told the room that whilst the money is there, the project is 'on pause until we sort out the Manxman's problem'.

The Sea Services Agreement - the contract between government and the Steam Packet that sets out the services it's required to provide - states a replacement for Manannan should be secured by 2026.

But at the start of the year, the ferry operator said it would look to replace the fast craft by 2030.

It held a survey into the vessel's replacement - receiving more than 4,500 responses.

Manx Radio asked the company to clarify its position.

A spokesperson told us: "The planning and preparatory work for our replacement vessel project continues behind the scenes."

With regards to the Manxman, the company said back in July that its flagship would be back in service at some point later this month, but so far, we haven't been provided with any return date.

There has been no official update, with speculation online stating that the vessel may not return by that deadline, as repair works are still ongoing.

Manx Radio asked the Steam Packet for a statement about the vessel's return.

The spokesperson told us: "With regard to the Manxman dry dock extension, repair work remains ongoing. We will provide regular updates over the coming weeks on the progress of these repairs; however, we are unable to comment on speculation circulating online."

If you log onto the ferry's website, you are able to book a sailing on the Manxman from 1 October.
