Mec Vannin to mark 100th anniversary
The Island's general strike of 1918 was vital in securing labour rights for future generations of Manx people - that's according to Mec Vannin member, Alastair Kneale.
The unprecedented industrial action was caused by the withdrawal of a flour subsidy by government - which resulted in the price of bread rising significantly, from nine-pence to a shilling.
It brought the Island to a standstill until the subsidy resumed, and other demands; like the introduction of pensions and health insurance were met in the following years.
The Manx nationalist party will commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the strike next year with a series of events.
